WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH YOUR BABY

  • The baby continues to develop at a rapid rate. It is now a foetus. By the end of this month, the baby is about three and a half inches long. The baby weighs just eleven grams. The head is about half the size of the body by the end of the month.

  • The heart now has four chambers. The foetal heart rate can vary from 120 to 160 beats per minute. Some people say the foetal heart rate can be used to predict gender. This can be fun, but isn’t always reliable. For now, you’ll need to wait and just imagine the baby.
  • The genitals are forming, but are too small to show on ultrasound.
  • The eyes are forming and the baby can now open her eyelids.
  • The ears are forming. Vocal cords begin to develop this month as well.
  • By the end of the month, fingers and toes can be seen. The baby is moving her arms and legs. She is still very small, so you won’t feel any of these movements.
  • The umbilical cord is completely formed by the end of this month. The intestines are on the outside of the umbilical cord, rather than inside the baby’s abdomen. The baby is so small that they don’t fit.

Ayurvedic view

  • In 3rd month all the indriyas and minor body parts appear.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH YOU

On an average about two to four pounds of weight is gained for the first trimester. If you have been suffering from nausea and vomiting then weight gained maybe below average. Weight gain will pick up in the second trimester and will reach peak in the third trimester. Overweight women will be encouraged to gain slightly less. Women with multiple pregnancies and underweight women will be expected to gain more weight. Ask your doctor about your weight goal. About three hundred extra calories per day is all that you require meeting your baby’s nutritional needs. So don’t take the phrase “eating for two” too seriously. Gaining too much weight can increase the aches and pains of pregnancy, may increase blood pressure and put extra strain on your back. Focus on a healthy diet and regular exercise. Do not get obsessed with weight scale. The ultimate goal of pregnancy lies in yours and the baby’s health. Your breasts are growing larger and you may begin to see veins in them. Veins may also be seen in the abdomen and legs. This is caused by the increase in your blood supply.

Garbhini lakshana – 3rd month

  • Dislike for food
  • Craving for sour substances
  • Vomiting

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

There will be a decrease in HCG levels due to which nausea and vomiting symptoms will reduce. But there will be an onset of gastrointestinal disorders like gas, constipation and occasional heartburn. An increase in progesterone levels will slow down the functioning of digestive system leading to constipation. The fetus exerts pressure on the intestine as it grows and adds on to the problem.

Prenatal vitamins with added iron and iron supplements can also cause constipation. So talk to your provider for a dosage adjustment or for an extended release formula. Appropriate exercise, plenty of water intake and increase in dietary fiber may provide some relief. Laxatives or stool softeners should be taken only under medical supervision.
Other pregnancy symptoms that may continue or begin this month include –

  • Nausea

YOUR EMOTIONS

Women may experience a wide range of emotional feelings. Some women find a sense of calm and peacefulness during this time. Other women may feel emotional and switch from feeling happy to having fears about the future. You may be surprised at how quickly these feelings can change. These differences are normal and are caused by hormonal changes.

This is a good time for you to begin to think about the baby’s birth. What do you want from your birth experience? This is a good time to start reading and watching videos about pregnancy, labor and birth. The information will give you a sense of what you want and don’t want.
