Your dream child at 4th week

If successful conception occurs, your body will produce high level of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) especially in the morning. High level of HCG, which makes pregnancy test read positive, are necessary to sustain pregnancy. A plug of mucus develops at the entrance of the uterus to protect your little one from infection.

Development

This week marks the beginning of the embryonic period. From now until 10 weeks, all of your baby's organs will begin to develop and some will even begin to function. As a result, this is the time when she'll be most vulnerable to anything that might interfere with her development. In this week the cells are dividing and multiplying rapidly, and three layers of cells have now formed.

  • The ectoderm (outer layer), will eventually become the baby's skin, eyes, hair, their nervous system, their brain, and even the enamel of their teeth.
  • The middle layer (mesoderm) will become their skeleton, muscles and kidneys, tissues and vascular (blood) system.
  • The layer on the inside (endoderm) will eventually become their internal organs like lungs, liver, bladder and digestive system.

Appearance

The cells of embryo grow lengthwise, so that the initially round cluster of cells assumes a leaner shape. The outer cells extended tiny finger-like projections (villi), which link up with your circulation.

Does even a faint line mean I'm pregnant?

  • If you see a positive result on your test, even if it's very light, chances are there that you're pregnant. For a home pregnancy test to show a positive result, your body has to be making a detectable level of HCG. To be sure, take another test in two or three days.
  • If the second positive result is more pronounced, congratulations. If the second test is completely negative, you may have had a very early miscarriage. Experts estimate that 20 to 30 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, so unfortunately this is very common.
  • Most pregnancy tests say that you can check results within five minutes, but a study at the University of New Mexico found that in some cases, it was necessary to wait ten minutes for a positive result.

Tip for the Week

Try to eat healthy, which means choosing a variety of foods from recommended food groups and drinking at least eight 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. But you don't really need to "eat for two"; you only need an extra 300 calories per day while you're pregnant. And don't worry if your food intake drops in the beginning because of morning sickness. If you've been eating right already, your baby will get what it needs.
